A Powerful True Story Takes the Stage

Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre is proud to present as part of our 2026 summer lineup. This Tony award-winning musical, written by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, premiered on Broadway in 2017 and quickly became a global phenomenon. Come From Away earned 7 Tony Award nominations, winning for Best Direction of a Musical, and has touched audiences around the world with its remarkable true story of compassion and community.

Set in the week following the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the musical tells the extraordinary true tale of 7,000 stranded airline passengers who were welcomed by the people of Gander, Newfoundland, when U.S. airspace was closed.

Gander is situated on the island of Newfoundland, which is part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The island's isolation and the town's strategic location made it a crucial emergency landing site for transatlantic flights. During the 9/11 events, the community's response was remarkable; residents opened their homes, schools, and community centers to provide shelter, food, and comfort to the stranded passengers.

The show follows both the townspeople and the unexpected guests as they navigate fear, uncertainty, and most importantly connection.
