Anastasia: The Musical, with music and lyrics by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens and a book by Terrence McNally, is inspired by the 1997 animated film and the enduring legend of Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia, rumored to have survived the execution of her family in 1918. The stage adaptation, which premiered at Hartford Stage in 2016 and later on Broadway in 2017, reimagines the story with a more historically grounded perspective, replacing the film’s magical elements with political intrigue and emotional depth.
The story begins in 1906 St. Petersburg, where the young Grand Duchess Anastasia is gifted a music box by her grandmother, the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, before the latter departs for Paris. Fast forward to 1917, and the Romanov family is attacked by Bolsheviks during a palace ball, leaving their fate ambiguous. By 1927, in Leningrad (formerly St. Petersburg), an amnesiac young woman named Anya, haunted by dreams of a lost past, crosses paths with two conmen, Dmitry and Vlad Popov. They plan to pass her off as Anastasia to claim a reward from the Dowager Empress in Paris, unaware that Anya might be the real princess. Pursued by Gleb, a Bolshevik officer determined to silence her, Anya embarks on a journey to uncover her true identity, finding love, courage, and family along the way.
This production is a sweeping saga of self-discovery, blending heart-wrenching ballads like “Once Upon a December” and “Journey to the Past” with lively ensemble numbers such as “A Rumor in St. Petersburg” and “Paris Holds the Key (To Your Heart).” With 16 new songs alongside six from the film, the musical offers a rich score that captures the emotional and historical weight of Anya’s quest.
Our production is helmed by the visionary Antoinette Dipietropolo, who serves as both Director and Choreographer, bringing her passion for storytelling and dynamic movement to the stage. She is joined by Scott Michaelsen, our Music Director and Conductor, who leads a talented orchestra to bring the show’s soaring score to life. Megan Ruth Smith serves as Assistant Director/Choreographer, adding her expertise to the intricate dance sequences, while Nick Thorpe oversees Music/Audio Supervision to ensure every note resonates perfectly.
