by Lucille Fletcher
You pick up the phone to call your husband. The line crosses, and suddenly you're listening to two men calmly planning a murder for later tonight. You call the operator. You call the police. Nobody takes you seriously. And the woman they're talking about sounds an awful lot like you. What do you do?
That's where Sorry, Wrong Number begins. Then we head out on the open road with The Hitch-Hiker, where Ronald Adams drives west from Brooklyn and keeps seeing the same man by the side of the road, thumbing a ride, always miles ahead of where anyone could possibly be.
Lucille Fletcher wrote both of these 1940s suspense classics, and they've had quite a life since. Orson Welles called Sorry, Wrong Number “the greatest single radio script ever written.” It became the 1948 film starring Barbara Stanwyck, who earned an Academy Award nomination for the role, and in 2015 the Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry. The Hitch-Hiker was written for Welles himself and later became a 1960 episode of The Twilight Zone.
Now imagine both stories up close. This is one night only, with just 40 seats inside the Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre Studio, so close you'll catch every nervous breath. It's a staged reading, with scripts in hand, period touches, lighting, and sound effects pulling you right into the story. Grab a glass of wine or a beer, settle in, and let the tension build. 1940s dress is welcomed.
